COASTAL COLCH INST. MARCH 14

Essex students with learning difficulties have been gaining new skills by ‘getting into golf’.

They’ve been learning to play the game and also developing their teamwork, communication and co-ordination skills.

The project, which started with one group of 18 teenagers at the Colchester Institute’s Clacton campus, has proved so successful that two other groups have just begun ‘get into golf’ sessions, including one in Colchester. A satellite club has also been set up to offer weekly sessions for those who want to go on playing the game.

Golf professional Tom Hide and his colleagues at the Coastal Golf Academy have been coaching the first group at Millers Barn and Frinton Golf Clubs. He said: “It’s been so rewarding to bring people into the sport and to see them enjoy it.”
